Developing your rope risk profile

Rope involves risk. Both the fibers we use and the people we tie with are imperfect. We can’t control everything that happens in a scene. But we can make informed choices about which types of risk we may be more willing, or entirely unwilling, to assume.

Risk profiles are highly individual creatures: what seems reasonable to one person may not make sense for another. Class participants will actively work through a framework identifying the various levels of risk involved with different types of ties and suspensions. The purpose of the class is to encourage participants to develop their individual risk profile, and to consider how that profile can function as a foundation for play and communication.

This class is taught from a bottom’s perspective, but will also be useful for tops interested in thinking through and developing a framework for what types of risk they are comfortable in engaging.
Though focused on rope-related risk, those interested in impact or edge play may also find the framework to be valuable in their kink activities.

Revenge of the words: Communication in and out of scene

Wording is hard. Finding the right language to express who you are and what you like and what you want is complicated. It gets even more complicated because people don’t always interpret what we say in the way we intended it.

Come and learn about how to write profiles that reflect your identity and communicate your personality, how to use words for impact in journal/blog entries, as well as how to use writing erotica as a negotiation tool / scene description. The class will be driven by participants’ interests, and may also cover how to word introduction emails, dating profiles, and frameworks for negotiation, depending on what participants are interested in.

Speed Meeting

Soooo many people, so little time!!!! If only there were a way to get to know people quickly and safely.

Well for the low low price of admission, you can have just that!

Participants will be able to meet each other one on one for a short duration. No pressure. Just making friends. Then after a given amount of time, we will switch pairings up until we run out of time or partner pairings.

Warning: This is not speed dating. People who are being creepy will be asked to leave and taken out of the pairing pool.

Rope 102 – Hogties and Harnesses

This is not a beginners class. We will assume that you already know basic one and two column ties and that you know enough about the safety involved with lose of circulation and nerve clusters.

Hogties are one of the most iconic types of body ties. There are many variations of the hogtie, each with their own uses and considerations when tying. We will also be going over harnesses that can be easily transitioned into hogties or used to branch off into other types of ties.

This will be a hands on class so bring your own rope or use the rope provided. Due to the nature of this class, we will be limiting the number of participants to 30 people (15 couples). If you have your own partner, it is recommended you bring them. If you come stag, we will try to pair you up, but there is no guarantee that there will be partners of your liking to work with.

Open Relationship Meet Up

There are many flavors of “Open” relationships. Poly, Swinger, Don’t ask/Don’t Tell, One night stands, etc. It doesn’t mater what flavor of open you identify as, we welcome all to this meet up.

If you are just curious and want to come talk to people, you are welcome as well. All we ask is you come with open minds.

This is for the purposes of meeting others only and not a “Play” or “Hook up” party. Hosts will be on hand to assist anyone who needs assistance .

Upping the Ante.

Spanking, rope, cuffs, yawn. Those things were hot before, but they have been getting a little old. Time to step things up.

Consensual fear can turn things on their head. So many things can be used in your arsenal. We will be going over a tropes as well as using a persons personal fears to enhance the games.

Fear can be combined with rough body play to trip a persons mental faculties into a base state, letting them let go of their humanity to become something more primal. We will be going over how and demonstrating these techniques

Aftercare is an integral part of the process as sometimes the re-entry from the scene is hard on the bottom. So we will be going over some of the things you can do to help the process and to ensure that they are able to feel safe and respected once again.

Appropriation versus Diversity: Beating the Double-edged Sword

One of the adages fed to writing students everywhere is “write what you know.”
But anyone who writes only about themselves is likely to be accused of lacking in diversity and needing to represent under-represented voices/characters more. Write about anyone other than yourself, though, and you risk being accused of appropriation.
How do you get around this double-edged sword? And how do you keep this struggle from empowering your internal censor to the point where you are too paralyzed to write anything at all? Politically progressive, inclusive voices are too important to be silenced by fear! Come get empowered to find your inner voice and tell the stories that need to be told.

Cosplay as Roleplay

Chances are if you’ve participated in any kind of BDSM play, you’ve played a bit with roles, even if the roles are as basic as “master” and “slave.” How do you level up to something more complicated or dramatic, and why would you want to?
In this class we’ll talk about using the techniques of improvisational acting to add drama to roleplay scenes and make them run smoothly. Roleplay is a powerful relationship tool because it bonds our imaginations together and creates an incredible sense of shared experience. Whether you want to see what would really happen if Catwoman captured the Batman, or you want to do a doctor/patient scene to jazz up using all the medical toys you bought, we have tips for you!

Queering Harry Potter

When J.K. Rowling announced to the world after the publication of the final book of the Harry Potter series that Dumbledore was gay, was she secretly inviting us all to look for what other “obvious but unspoken” queer characters and relationships were sitting there among the pages?
We will discuss the ample evidence for the queerness of other characters in the series, and tackle such questions as “is Ginny Weasley a beard?”

Tarot as Storytelling

In this class we will explore the Tarot as a writing tool, as a method for divining what lies within. No prior knowledge of the Tarot is necessary for this class, though those experienced with the cards will also find plenty to engage them here.
All storytellers, bards, and writers are welcome to learn the so-called magic behind using the archetypes in the Tarot as a means to channel character, plot, conflict, resolution, and theme.
Please bring a deck if you have a favorite.

Wizarding Sex Ed

(A Harry-Potter-themed icebreaker event.)
Calling all witches, wizards, and Hogwarts alumni of all genders! It’s very important before you attempt to enter the premises of the Geeky Kink Event that you attend this important Ministry-approved orientation seminar on erotic magic.
We’ll be teaching you a specific list of sex-related spells and techniques that should ONLY be practiced on other magical people, as well as orienting you to important Muggle knowledge such as the fact that they have wands, too! (Yes they seem to be of either only one specific color–purple?–or to have come from Japanese wandmaker Hitachi.)
No potions allowed.
Please bring your wands (or a practice wand will be issued to you) and be ready to use it.

Different Ways of “Connecting” with Rope

The term “Connective” rope has been used in various contexts, but often refers to a specific style. At its core, though, rope bondage is an experience involving two or more people. The experience is not always sensual.
In this class, we will go over different ways that I have seen people interact when rope bondage is involved, and there will be short exercises where attendees can try out each way. This is in no way an exhaustive survey of how people do rope bondage, but it will help show the versatility of rope bondage.

Grappling for Fun and Play

Grappling and wrestling with your partner can be an extremely enjoyable experience.
In this class, we will go over basic safety, and how to first negotiate the scene. Then, we will start going through a few simple things one can do, whether partners prefer to grapple on equal terms, or if there is a power dynamic involved.
This class will have a lot of audience participation for those who desire to try things out.

Paracord: Big Fun in a Small Package

Paracord is a strong utility cord which has several very nice properties for bondage. It is also easily obtained, cheap, and easily cleaned.
This class first introduces how paracord can be used in bondage, and teaches some simple ties which make use of some of the interesting properties of paracord.

BDSM and Mental Health

My magic 8 ball of statistics says it’s very likely that you or someone you care about deals with a mental illness? Mental illness is an extremely common but little understood and highly stigmatized issue in our society.

In this class we will talk about some of the basics of mental illness and how it can affect you and loved ones in the context of kink and BDSM. After busting some of the myths surrounding mental illness we will cover the basics of thought and mood disorders, how to find effective treatment, how to be supportive and be supported, and how to differentiate between therapeutic activities and therapy, and where kink fits in the spectrum.

We’re (not) All Mad Here; Coping Skills: For Life, Kink, and Cons

Conventions are intense, emotionally, physically, mentally, and often sexually. Even when we’re flying high during, many of us deal with the bummer of “con drop” after the fun is over. Life outside of conventions tends not to be real easy either, most of us deal with intense stressors of some kind, normal ones and the special ones that come with being kinky fuckers. In this class you will learn and have a chance to practice skills and techniques to keep mind, body, and emotions healthy wherever you may find yourself. Participation encouraged (but not required)

Boundary Control; How to Say “No”

“No” is a very difficult thing to say, but it is one of the most important ways to keep yourself safe in the scene. Many of us have been raised, and are eager, to please. We fear saying no will disappoint someone and cause us to be disliked. While it’s easy to tell someone to “just say no” many of us have a very difficult time putting that into practice. This class offers perspective, techniques, and practice in ways to say “No”.

Fixing Your Fuckup

As kinksters we spend a lot of time learning how to prevent consent violations but unfortunately even the best preparations and intentions aren’t always enough. In this class we will discuss what to do when you have been hurt, or hurt someone else, and how both sides can move forward with integrity, maturity, and compassion.

Prioness – Natalie is a four year old trans women with a passion for pain, poly, and all things kink. She has been in the scene since 2013, regularly attends events on the east coast, and teaches classes on bottoming, gender, and kink 101s . Intersections of Gender and Kink

There are a lot of uninformed, and at times, silly questions people want to ask about gender, a *whole* lot. What better way to clear things up than by asking you, the audience, some equally useless questions? This class will cover the basics of gender, sex, and expression while posing tough questions like “Should I bring my flogger to the office?” and “Are you a top or a bottom?”
Hopefully by the end of the class you’ll better understand what might be important to your partners, how gender can fit in your toy box, and how get on to the fun parts without sticking your foot in your mouth.

Rope by Number -or- Rope 101 you can remember

Are you new to rope or have taken a 101 but forgotten everything the minute you walked out the door? Well then, have I got the class for you. I’ll go over the basic parts of rope, such as wrist ties and chest/leg harnesses in a way that is much easier to remember.
What to bring: Rope! at least one 30′ length is fine but two is better.

SaraScalper

Sara Scalper is a delightfully genderfluid, queer, nonmonogamous lifestyle sadist who has been topping for 14+ years, have been involved in the public BDSM scene for over a dozen, and has been a part of the Boston scene since 2010. They self-identify as 75% intersexed being, 20% Amazonian woman, and 5% primal male (these identities are constantly in flux), but are always 100% ethical sadist.

They also get great pleasure from being a “scene aunt” to newer folks in the scene, teaching them how to top safely (via classes or one-on-one instruction) and/or how to negotiate so they have safe, satisfying scenes. They can often be found with their lovely wife and collared submissive, AJ, and their extended “poly family,” and love to talk ethical nonmonogamy as much as they do BDSM.

From the Sensual to the Sadistic:
Calibration = Good Scenes For Every Body

What is calibration, you may ask? Well, the dictionary definition is “the act of checking or adjusting the accuracy of an instrument.” Applying this concept in a BDSM context in a scene, a top’s body (and their implements, an extension of their body) is the instrument. The top can adjust their movements, what implements they use, the intensity of their use, the patterns they are used in, etc. to become more “in tune” with the bottom. This results in a more satisfying scene for all.
Toppy folks will learn how to negotiate safely and thoroughly with bottoms, clearly read the communication signals that bottoms give off during a scene, and calibrate their actions resulting in longer and more satisfying scenes.
Bottomy folks will learn what to look for when negotiating with a potential top as well as ways to communicate how they’re feeling during a scene in order to assist the top in calibration.

Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Negotiation, Ever!

Want to create an amazing scene or a lasting BDSM relationship and don’t know where to start? Communication is key, and the most important form of communication that should be occurring during the early stages of forming any connection is negotiating what each party wants from the interaction/relationship.
Sara Scalper (with assistance from their lovely wife, AJ) will show you how to negotiate for a variety of types of scenes (basic SM, physical edge play, D/s, emotional edge play, etc.) as well as regarding the protocols and minutiae of a potential D/s relationship. Whether you’re an old pro or are just dipping your toe into the kink scene, join this class and learn some new ways of communicating your scene and relationship needs.

You’re a Sadist and It’s Okay

Many of us have felt immense guilt when we’ve realized just how much we enjoy hurting people, due to social constructs. Newsflash: enjoying being sadistic is perfectly okay in a safe, ethical, and fully consensual context, and being able to be sadistic doesn’t mean you must be cold or lack empathy. Discuss some of the difficulties you’ve have had when embracing your sadistic tendencies as well as an exploration of why these difficult feelings occur.
Explore misconceptions regarding sadism as well as different types of ethical sadism/sadist archetypes. There will be a “develop your inner sadist” portion where we’ll share deviously delicious tips and tricks on ways to cause hurt without causing harm.
Note: there will be a “section” of this class devoted to female-identified or femme-presenting folks who identify as tops/sadists, as they have their own particular struggles in regards to their sadist identities.

Coming Out: What? Who? Why? Where? How?

Everyone knows that “coming out” regarding anything (being GLBTQ, kinky, non-monogamous, etc.) is difficult and potentially life-changing, but not everyone is aware of the potential consequences of not “coming out.”
Lifestyle sadist/dominant, kink educator, and professional therapist Sara Scalper will use this class to talk about what “coming out” means, the repercussions of not coming out, and the stresses related to coming out, and will additionally offer tips for coming out and techniques for self-care during the coming out process. They will also talk about coming out regarding consent violations, as these occur frequently in our community and folks often face similar stresses when choosing whether or not to reveal what has happened to them as well as similar repercussions when they do not reveal them.
The last portion of the class will function as a discussion, allowing people to share their coming out stories and their own tips and tricks, as well as to ask questions/brainstorm about potential “Coming Out” approaches. Whether you’re so out of the closet that the door’s locked behind you or you’re in the back behind all the coats, come join us as we discuss something that affects the lives of everyone in the kink community.

Kinetic Play with Zany Danger!

The intent for this class is to facilitate participants to rediscover some childlike wonder, glee and play and integrate it with to our more adult awareness and kink. We will experiment with rope, balance, connection, laughter, lust and trust. Some exciting, delightful and thrilling activities we will do are: get dizzy with a partner, be flung around the room, rope madlibs/ twister & create a human whirligig. If you are very lucky (or brave) we will toss you up in the air!
This will be an active class physically and energetically, though no fancy knots will be required (or excluded.) Be willing to meet and explore new people and make new connections.
Bring at least one 30′ length of 6mm rope, your sense of adventure and a willingness to laugh and be silly.
